Light Pillar

A **light pillar** is a stunning optical phenomenon that appears as a vertical beam of light extending above or below a light source. It occurs when light—natural or artificial—reflects off tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, usually in cold weather. The effect is most commonly seen with the sun (solar pillar) at sunrise or sunset but can also appear around the moon or streetlights. These pillars create an ethereal, almost otherworldly glow, making the sky look surreal and magical. Often mistaken for auroras, light pillars are a breathtaking display of nature’s interaction with light and ice.
